The cone flower or Echinacea purpurea is native to the Eastern U.S. and oddly enough it's generic Greek name echino means sea urchin because of it's spiny central disks. The lady bug or Coccinellidae as it's formally called in the insect world is a wonderful garden soldier, taking special care to eat every aphid he sees, his appetite is unmatched and he is a great friend to the garden in controlling many unwanted insects. Beautifully painted by mother nature herself with it's bright red shell and vivid black polka dots, his head is so wonderfully marked and is truly a work of art designed by nature for all to enjoy.
