Description
Blue Dasher dragonfly on a blackberry branch in neon style art. Seemingly staring eye to eye with me.
The dragonfly is both an aquatic and land creature, as larvae it lives in the water but can come on land as well. As adults they will still return to the water to feed at times but normally gathering insects in mid air is how it hunts. The children in the orient have a game to catch large dragonflies by pebbles tied to both ends of a hair, they throw it in the air, the dragonfly thinks it is his prey and attacks and becomes entwined in the hair, the weight of the pebbles bringing his very agile body to the ground. Dragonflies are very fast in flight and like a hummingbird can hover and fly in reverse. Their wings have little pockets to catch air that helps them in flight, most people think the wings are flat but they are not. It only takes 30 flaps per minute to keep them in the air, while a fly takes 600 flaps per minute to keep it airborne. Fossils indicate that at one time the dragonfly had a wingspan of 2 to 2 and a half foot in length. If they were still alive today we would have problems with keeping smaller animals safe as at that size they could easily dominate them. They use their legs to act as a scoop and grabber to catch their prey. Both beautiful and very agile and proficient in hunting, this incredible creature is magnificent to it's viewer. Their big buggy eyes are a marvelous thing as well as they can see 360 degrees, so it's like they really have about 30,000 eyes watching for prey and predator at all times.
