Description
State of Alabama, Alabama State Capital Building. The clock, along with a liberty bell, was purchased by the City of Montgomery and presented to the state in 1852. The original Alabama Capitol Building was built in 1847 by Stephen Button who was a Philidelphia architect. The style of the Capitol was a Greek Revival structure. It burned in 1849, and was rebuilt and completed in 1851 following the same architectural style.
Several additions have been made over the years and it was restored in 1992. The Confederacy began in the original Senate chamber. Jefferson Davis took his oath as the President of the Confederate States of America here. The Civil Voting Rights March ended here1965 in front of the capitol building.
The governor and other executive branch officers still occupy offices in the Capitol.
