The AGM-28 Hound Dog Missile was the United States' first Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALGM). It was made to deliver W28, 4-megaton nuclear warheads. North American Aviation was contracted in 1958 to build the prototype. The AGM-28 was put into service in 1966. Pratt and Whitney J52-P-3 turbojets provided the propulsion with 7,500 pounds of thrust. A total of 722 of these missiles were produced from 1961 through 1975. In 1976, all AGM-28 Hound Dog Missiles were taken out of service and replaced by the AGM-69 Short Range Attack Missile (SRAM). The AGM-28 had a 12' wingspan, 42'6" in length, with a launch weight of 10,000 pounds. The missile had a range of 700 miles and it's top speed was 1,020 mph with a ceiling of 200' to 55,000'. The Hound Dog used the N5G Inertial Navigation System with a B-52G Stratofortress platform. Original photograph taken at Veterans Memorial Park located in Florence, Alabama.
